IPS schools have increased their graduation rate by about 17%! Unfortunately it seems that they haven’t done this by providing better education, they have accomplished this by providing waivers to students so that they can graduate. 26.7% of IPS students last year graduated with a diploma using a waiver.
In case your wondering in order for a student to graduate - among other factors, it requires the student to pass Algebra I (generally taken in 9th grade) and 10th grade English.
“To earn a waiver, seniors who have not passed one of the required tests must show they had 95% attendance and had a C average in that subject. If they took the test every time it was offered, completed extra help sessions offered at school and earned a recommendation from a teacher and the principal they can still graduate.” - Scott Elliott
To put this in perspective, statewide 21.41% of black students graduated with a waiver compared to 14.12% of hispanic students, and 5.7% of white students.
Something is obviously wrong with this.
